A buyer in Jumeirah was about to sign his handover papers when he glanced at the dashboard.
The odometer read 312 kilometres.
He asked the salesperson. He was told it was “just from test drives and the delivery route.” When he pressed for a breakdown, no one could give him a satisfactory answer.
He called us. We came to the showroom and helped him ask the right questions. The dealer eventually admitted the car had been used as a demo unit for several weeks before being reclassified as new stock.
The buyer walked away and ordered a replacement unit.
If he hadn’t looked at the odometer before signing, he would never have known.
Why Does a Brand-New Car Already Have Kilometres?
Every new vehicle accumulates some kilometres before it reaches the buyer. This is entirely normal.
Factory testing. Quality control drives before the car leaves the production facility — typically 1–5 km.
Port and stockyard movements. Loading onto transporters, positioning in the yard, moving to the PDI facility — these add up.
Importer PDI. The importer’s team drives the vehicle as part of their pre-delivery inspection — often 5–15 km.
Dealer PDI. The showroom adds its own check and road test.
Showroom test drives. Every prospective buyer who test-drove the car before you adds kilometres to the vehicle you’re about to purchase.
What Is Normal for UAE Deliveries?

What High Mileage at Delivery Can Indicate
Demo or Display Use
Some cars are used as demonstration vehicles for weeks or months before being quietly reclassified as new stock. A demo car will have higher kilometres, potential wear on the driver’s seat and steering wheel, and possibly signs of heavier use in the engine bay.
Unreported Test Drives
In busy showrooms, a car not formally marked as the demo unit can still accumulate test drive kilometres across multiple prospective buyers over several weeks.
Administrative Trips
Registration authority visits, inspection centre trips, or other administrative requirements can add legitimate kilometres — but these should be documented.
Damage Repair and Return
If a vehicle was damaged and taken to a bodywork facility, the drive there and back appears on the odometer without necessarily appearing in your paperwork. High mileage and a paint scan should always be checked together. A full car inspection covers both as part of a single review.
How to Check Before You Sign
Look at the odometer before the test drive. Take a photo and note the exact reading — this is your reference point.
Ask the dealer directly. “Can you give me a breakdown of how these kilometres were accumulated?” A dealer who won’t answer this is a dealer worth being cautious around.
Request the PDI documentation. Both the importer’s and dealer’s records should exist. They give you a timeline, even if not a kilometre-by-kilometre breakdown.
Have an inspector check interior wear. A car with 300 kilometres should show essentially no interior wear. Softening on the steering wheel grip, wear on the driver’s seat bolster, or marks on the pedal rubbers suggest heavier use than the reading implies.
What to Do If You’re Not Comfortable with the Mileage
Ask for a price adjustment. A car with 300+ km is not in the same condition as one with 15 km. The difference in residual value is real.
Request a written explanation. Ask for the mileage history in writing, signed by the sales manager. This protects you if questions arise later.
Request a replacement unit. If the dealer cannot explain the mileage satisfactorily, ask that your order be fulfilled with a different vehicle.
Walk away. It’s emotionally harder when you’ve been waiting for a car — but it’s a legitimate option.
